The Trooper

Trapped inside a shell,
No emotions or thought.
Shamed by the death around me,
destroyed by lost hope.
The bombs are deafening,
shattering the perception of reality.
Gun shots wound my body,
but what of my dignity?
Death is my only option,
should I embrace it openly?
Shamed by the country I serve,
the death of my friends.
Reminded of my luck,
all days still seem black.
Shame of a war veteran,
left to starve in the cold.
War never changes,
the shame lasts forever.
The shame of loss.
The shame of death.
The shame of a trooper.
Left to die alone,
in the midst of war.
